Yogjakarta
Yesterday, we left for the place where my Dad was born. I've never been here before, so am very excited to explore this city and its surroundings. It's situated very close to the Borobudur, the biggest Buddhist temple in the world, which we went to go visit today. Just the other day my Mom told me that my grandmother and her family were buddhist as well. I'm very curious to learn more about her background, however, my grandmother was born in an era where people did not have a last name, and kept no records of birth dates. So it would be close to impossible to try and find out more - based on her first name and guestimated date of birth only.
De onderneming
In any case, I'm looking forward to visiting the region, and perhaps even see the site where my grandfather used to be supervisor of a sugar company. He and his family lived on-site, so my father and his 12(!) siblings all grew up on the grounds of 'de onderneming' (the enterprise), as my Dad would call it. Unfortunately, the building has been torn down so that's a big shame. It would have been cool to see where my Dad grew up and put all his stories he shared with me just before he passed away into context. But I guess that's just life. Bummer.
