20 eurocents

That's what a rice farmer receives for 1 kg (approx. 2.2 lbs) of rice. Given that we pay approx. 2 euros for 500 grams of processed rice in the Netherlands, it made me think of how much all other players in the chain strike up in terms of revenues and profits. The margins probably won't be very large all around, however, if you think of this whole concept of fair trade and sustainability (people, planet, profit) then it does make me somewhat uncomfortable. Especially as a guest to this country where land owners are all just trying to make a living on their small patch of land.
Think about it
We just stumble into a supermarket and grab everything off a shelf somewhere, but it takes 3 to 6 months to grow a crop of rice, and there are times that the crop yields are low. Again, I'm trying to visualize what it would be like if it were me that had to plough and work the land, and grow the crop for a few cents per kilo. And feed a family somehow. We take so much for granted and yet all we want is more. Preferably instantaneously. What's wrong with this picture?
